LONDON -- Journalists at Britain's Sun newspaper paid large sums of cash to corrupt public officials, aware the practice was criminal, an inquiry into press ethics heard on Monday, revelations that could prove damaging to Rupert Murdoch's media empire.
The Metropolitan Police's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers told Britain's media ethics inquiry that the newspaper openly referred to paying its sources and that such payments were authorized at a senior level.
"The current assessment is that it reveals a network of corrupted officials," Akers said.
The disclosures could damage Murdoch's News Corp if it gives ammunition to the FBI and other American government agencies that have stepped up their hunt for signs of illegality at the U.S.-based company.
"There appears to have been a culture at the Sun of illegal payments, and systems have been created to facilitate those payments whilst hiding the identity of officials receiving the money," said Akers, who is in charge of the investigation into phone hacking and police bribery.
A senior British police officer told Britain's media ethics inquiry Rupert Murdoch's News International had a culture of making illegal payments to corrupt public officials and used bullying, blackmail and hacking to get stories. ITN's Keir Simmons reports.
She said one of the journalists who had been arrested has "over several years received over 150,000 pounds ($238,000) in cash to pay his sources, a number of whom were public officials." She said payments to public officials went far beyond acceptable practices like buying contacts a meal or a drink.
Akers, who made her accusations a day after Murdoch launched The Sun's Sunday edition, said journalists paid not only police officers but also police, military, health and government officials. One official received a total of 80,000 pounds ($126,912) over several years, she said, adding that police also are investigating if public officials were placed on retainers by newspapers.

The policy changes, scheduled to automatically take effect for all users of Google products and services on March 1, 2012, invade consumers' privacy by unilaterally allowing Google to raid information it collects when a consumer uses one Google product and share it with all other service and products offered by Google. Individuals who allow Google access to certain information as part of using one service will now, whether they want to or not, be giving Google authority to use that information for all its services and products. Users who would like to use one Google product without allowing Google to access the information provided when they use another Google service will generally not be able to do so. The new policy also potentially heightens the risk of identity theft and fraud, since Google will now be storing far more comprehensive, consolidated personal information profiles.
"I am deeply concerned about Google's effort to push a major privacy change on consumers without giving them the choice to opt in, or at a minimum the opportunity to opt out," said Attorney General Gansler. "After years of touting its commitment to meaningful privacy choices for its users, Google should abide by its claimed privacy principles and let consumers decide whether to say 'No thanks' to a new policy."
Under the new privacy policy, Google gives itself the freedom to combine users' personal information from services like Web History and YouTube with all other Google products, and precludes existing users from fully opting out of this policy change unless they cease using the Google ecosystem entirely. Given Google's robust Internet market share across platforms, Internet users must acquiesce to diminished privacy or be cut off from a vast portion of their existing Internet experience.
For millions of consumers who use Android-powered smartphones, currently estimated to be 50 percent of the national smartphone market, ramifications of the new privacy policy will be virtually impossible to avoid Users of these smartphones must log in to Google to activate much of the functionality of their devices. With this newly consolidated bank of personal data, we foresee potentially more severe problems arising from any data breach."
The Attorneys General recognize there may be consumers who welcome the consolidation and indiscriminate sharing of their personal information and data across multiple platforms. Unfortunately, many more consumers will either dislike the consolidation or not realize the potential harm that comes from it. Consumers deserve a full accounting of how this new privacy policy may impact them, and a meaningful opportunity to avoid being subjected to it.
Given the serious concerns expressed on behalf of those consumers, the Attorneys General have requested a meeting with Google Inc. CEO Larry Page as soon as possible. This quick response is needed in order to enable the Attorneys General to review Google's accounting before the new privacy policy goes into effect.

Updated 1:38 p.m. ET: HAVANA, Cuba -- A senior U.S. senator met with imprisoned American Alan Gross and discussed the man's case in a long sit-down with Cuban President Raul Castro, but said Friday that he doesn't expect Gross to be released any time soon.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, said he saw Gross on Thursday afternoon at a Havana military prison. He and Sen. Richard Shelby, a Republican from Alabama, later met for 2 1/2 hours with Castro and offered to take Gross back to the United States on their plane.
"You can imagine how far that went," Leahy said in a phone interview Friday with The Associated Press. He added that "we have a long way to go" to win Gross's release.
Judy Gross, whose husband Alan has been in a jail in Cuba for two years, talks about his conviction and the struggle to bring him home.
The 62-year-old Maryland native is serving a 15-year jail term for spiriting satellite and other communications equipment onto the island while on a USAID-funded democracy-building program. Cuba considers the programs an attempt to destabilize the government, and Gross was convicted of crimes against the state, not espionage.
The Gross affair has chilled relations between the U.S. and Cuba and short-circuited any chance of rapprochement since President Barack Obama took office.
The Gross family wants Castro to pardon him on humanitarian grounds because his mother and adult daughter both have cancer, a call backed by the Obama administration, which insists Gross is innocent.
Leahy said Castro agreed that Gross "was no spy." Gross spoke virtually no Spanish and traveled to Cuba five times under his own name before his arrest in December 2009.
The talks with Castro and the senators was the first high-level meeting between the Cold War enemies since former President Jimmy Carter dined with Castro during a visit to the island in April 2010. Leahy said the late-night meeting was cordial and open.

Leahy said Castro never explicitly linked Gross' fate with that of the agents, who were jailed in 1998, but "he made it very clear that while we may be concerned for Mr. Gross and have humanitarian reasons to be, they are very concerned about the five (agents) and have humanitarian and family reasons too."
While the agents' case is largely forgotten in the United States, it remains a cause celebre in Cuba, where the government hails the "Cuban Five" as heroes who were only trying to detect and prevent violent attacks against their country by exile groups.
Cuban officials have stopped short of linking the cases, but have said no one should expect the island to free the 62-year-old American in a "unilateral gesture."
Gross's legal appeals have been exhausted, but his family has asked Castro to consider a pardon on humanitarian grounds. Gross, who was portly when arrested in December 2009, has lost about 100 pounds and is now rail thin. His elderly mother and adult daughter are both battling cancer.
Leahy said Gross appeared in reasonably good spirits during the visit, but that he also indicated his two years of detention had taken a toll on his health.
"He obviously wants to leave. He feels that his health has been endangered," Leahy said, adding that he snapped several pictures of Gross to bring back to his wife, Judy.
Cuban state-run media carried images of the meeting between Castro and the senators, though they gave no details of what was discussed. Cuban media said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was also present.
The senators are part of an American congressional delegation touring Cuba, Haiti and Colombia. The other members of the delegation, all Democrats, were Sens. Christopher Coons of Delaware and Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Reps. Peter Welch of Vermont and Xavier Becerra of California.

I just don't get it. But I cannot imagine that there are that man obese people in the States who can rightfully claim that their obesity comes from genetics (although I hear the excuse all of the time) and if obesity is recognized as a disease then that means that people who are simply to fat and lazy to do anything about their increasing weight will be able to receive free or reduced medical help, medications, and treatment that will be coming straight out of the taxpayer's pocket. They could even be looking at unemployment if their obesity stops them from working.
I'm not here to make fun of overweight people but I am 100% positive that the majority of obese people in the States are obese because they do nothing but eat and they do not exercise. It just worries me, is all.

HARFORD, Pa. (AP) ? For more than a decade, Bronson Pinchot has spent much of his downtime in the picture-book Pennsylvania hamlet where he found a dream home far from the stressful clamor of New York or L.A.
Pinchot likely remains best known as the endearingly naive, quasi-Mediterranean immigrant Balki Bartokomous from the TV sitcom "Perfect Strangers." But unlike Balki, Pinchot is by his own admission "fiercely private" and an "introvert that does a pretty convincing performance as an extrovert."
Still, he has decided to open his doors to America via "The Bronson Pinchot Project," which premiered Feb. 11 on the DIY Network. In all, eight episodes were shot over 13 weeks at the end of last year in Harford, a village founded in 1790 and nestled in the Endless Mountains of Susquehanna County near the New York state line.
His filmography includes 1980s hits like "Risky Business" and "Beverly Hills Cop," but since "Perfect Strangers" ended in 1993 after eight seasons, Pinchot has performed on and off-Broadway, appeared in touring theatrical productions and done voiceovers and audiobooks.
His new show, though, is altogether different.
First, the designs are his own. "I get a kick out of it because I sit there with a sketchbook and say, 'This is what it should look like when it's done' and in the end it either looks like that or it's better," he said. "My theater training helps; in theater, it doesn't matter where you're at with your performance, opening night is opening night."
Home base is Pinchot's circa 1840 mansion in the center of Harford, a town of about 1,300 people. It was the home of state Sen. Edward Jones in the early 1900s and had more recently served as office space. Pinchot bought the place in 2000.
"I wanted a Greek Revival house within five driving hours of New York City," Pinchot said. When he first walked in, he said, he knew he would buy it.
When he arrived, the scene couldn't have been better staged by a Hollywood set designer: The house smelled of cinnamon toast, the air outside smelled of fresh manure, a woman pushing a baby carriage paused to admire a neighbor's fuchsia roses across the street.
"I was already sold, but that was like God was hitting me over the head with a sledgehammer," he said. "OK, I get it, I get it!"
He now owns six historic properties in Harford, including what was a burned-out vacant home also from around 1840 and a sweet blue-shingled building that houses the town's post office. Eventually, he hopes many of the properties will be places for visiting friends to stay.
The first season's architectural stars are his Ionic-columned mansion and Decker House, a smaller home rehabbed with salvaged wood from demolished old buildings, windows from an abandoned farmhouse and floors from a property formerly part of late heiress Doris Duke's estate.
Not only is "The Bronson Pinchot Project" a show about historic restoration, it's a love letter to his adopted hometown.
"Harford is to be seen through my lens, which is that that it's heaven on earth," he said. "None of this 'big fish in a little pond.' No. We're not doing 'Green Acres.'"
Pinchot, 52, an antiques collector and enthusiast of classical art and architecture since childhood, is a hands-on renovator who employs local carpenters and craftspeople; many are slated to appear in the show.
Years of trial and error have culminated into the current style viewers will see taking shape ? a blend of English regency and American high country along with 19th-century plaster casts of ancient Greek sculpture and architectural flourishes. The goal is for rooms to look like they've taken shape over many decades, he said.
His earliest home rehab forays involved getting all the period details and furniture just right. But it felt wrong.
"I looked around and thought, 'Well now all it's missing is a docent and a leaflet that says where the cafe is," he said. "I made a little museum and that's not what I want."
Things you won't see in Bronson world: kitchen appliances. Refrigerators ? which Pinchot calls "unacceptably, unforgivably ugly" ? ovens, dishwashers and microwaves are cleverly concealed behind salvaged wainscoting, cupboards and cabinets mounted clandestinely on hinges, like a bookcase hiding a castle's secret passageway.
All of his properties eventually will get the full "Bronsonian" treatment, a process shaped both by the availability of salvage materials and Pinchot's own improvisational approach to renovating.
"I hope we can do this for 10 seasons!" he said. "We could do an episode on every room."

Nature Has A Good Beat, But Can You Dance To It?
Rhythm in music is about timing ? when notes start and stop. And now scientists say they've found a curious pattern that's common to musical rhythm. It's a pattern also found in nature.

Why are so many dolphins beaching themselves on Cape Cod?
In the past month, 177 short-beaked common?dolphins?have beached themselves on Massachusetts's Cape Cod, and, despite rescue efforts, 124 have died.
There's no good spot on Cape Cod for?dolphins?to continue this winter's massive and unexplained beachings, but a group of 11 has chosen one of the worst.
Skip to next paragraphThe remote inlet is a place where the tides recede fast and far, and that's left the animals mired in a grayish-brown mud.
Walking is the only way to reach the animals, but it's not easy. The muck that releases a footstep only after a sucking pop. One rescue volunteer hits a thigh-deep "hole" and tumbles.
One?dolphin?is dead, but the other 10 appear healthy, and some thump their tails in the shallows, struggling to move. Rescuers decide the best course is to wait for the incoming tide to free the?dolphins, then boats can try to herd them out of trouble. The only alternative is hauling them to a waiting trailer, and open water. But the trailer is nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) away.
Waiting has risks.?Dolphins?can't survive long on land, and there's no guarantee the boats can push the dolphins?on to safety.
"Now's where we start crossing our fingers," said Brian Sharp of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
A year ago, Tuesday's 11 stranded?dolphins?would have seemed remarkable.
But in the last month, 177 short-beaked common?dolphins?have stranded on Cape Cod, and 124 have died.
So far, there's no explanation.
Workers at the IFAW, which has led the rescue efforts, tag and take blood samples of the stranded animals, necropsies have been done on dead?dolphins?and a Congressional briefing was held early this month in the push for answers. But researchers can offer only theories about things such as changes in weather, water temperature or behavior of the?dolphins' prey.
Geography may also play a role, if the?dolphins?are getting lost along the Cape's jagged inner coastline.
Rescuers work in pairs to move the?dolphins?on slings, bringing them closer together and pointing the right way.
"We'll take advantage of the fact that they're social animals," said Kerry Branon, an IFAW spokeswoman. "We're hoping if we release them together, they'll stick together."
Not all the?dolphins?are on board, though. One drifts off to the left, where he could beach again. The manager of the stranding team, Katie Moore, slides over, grabs its dorsal fin, and gives it a push in the right direction.
"You're going the wrong way, buddy," she says.
The inlet continues to fill and the?dolphins?break into waters that are deeper than the rescuers can follow on foot. They take boats. The noise from the motors pushes the?dolphins?ahead. So do acoustic pingers, devices that make a sound that annoys the?dolphins.
From here, all the shore workers can do is await word from the boats, which will follow the?dolphins?until dark, if needed.
Volunteer Mike Giblin, muck still on his face, sits in his truck and explains why, at 64, he can't wait to get an early morning call to help the?dolphins. The animals are special, he says.
Moore later smiles at the thought, but dismisses any mystical link with the animals.
"They're wild animals," she says. "This is not comforting for them. They don't want to be touched."
She's been encouraged by IFAW's success so far in getting?dolphins?back to sea. She also believes in the work.
"I think that as humans we have such a huge impact on the ocean environment and on these animals in other ways, that this is our opportunity to do the right thing."
The?dolphins?would all eventually reach the bay.
