3 Steps to Turning Your Hobby into an Online Business | Create an ...

Categories | Online Business,

We all have a hobby. Mine is dancing. One of my friends paints little Dungeons & Dragons models. Another flies model aeroplanes. Yet another works on his vintage car. We are all completely unique in our passions. Why not turn that passion into an online business?

You may think that you don?t have the expertise to do it. You may think that you don?t have the tools to do it. Let me tell you, you are wrong.

The thing that people will pay for more than almost anything else is their passion. I will fly across the world for a single day to attend a dance event, then turn right around and come home. Is that stupid? Yes. Do I do it all the time? Yes.

All it takes is for you to create the market place, and people that are as passionate about your hobby as you are will come. And they will buy.

If you have ever had the thought of creating your own business from your hobby, here it is in 3 simple steps.

?

Step One ? Finding Your Market

Giraffe Painting by Contemporary Earth Art on EtsySo, you?re a passionate Giraffe Painter. Fantastic! Surely there must be others like you! Well, let?s find out. If you are the only person in the world that loves the look of a giraffe on canvas, when it comes to building an online business about it, you may be in some trouble. But most of the time, you?re not.

First thing you want to do is get as specific as possible about your hobby. So you love giraffes, let?s jump onto Google?s Keyword Tool and see what comes up when we do a Keyword Analysis. Amazingly, we get these results:

Giraffe Painting ? 2,900 monthly global searches ? Low Competition
How to Paint a Giraffe ? 1,600 monthly global searches ? Low Competition

So, obviously there are a lot of people that love giraffes on canvas! What do you do now? You create a product to sell to these people!

Let?s back up just one little step. Do you notice how specific Giraffe Painting is? We are not trying to sell ?Painting?, we are trying to sell ?Giraffe Painting?. If we were to try and take on the painting market, we would be quickly overwhelmed with competition. But, because we were so specific, we can find something that has little competition, and everyone that is searching for ?Giraffe Painting?, they are definitely there looking for how to paint portraits. You have an instant, highly targeted market. And that is crucial!

?

Step Two ? Creating Your Product

Let?s look at the options when it comes to Giraffe Painting in terms of what we can sell. Obviously we can paint up a giraffe and sell that painting. However, is that leveraging our time so that we are free from work? No!

What that is doing is creating more work for us! With every sale we make, we need to paint another Giraffe! You may want to do that, and that is fine, but there can be another way. If you love painting giraffes that much, you can skip ahead to step 3.

The 2nd option that pops into my head would be to sell Giraffe Painting Kits. Or perhaps paints in the colours of giraffes. Or painting stencils. You include the paint, the canvas and all the materials needed to create the perfect painting of a giraffe. This is great! Now, bear in mind that you are going to have to handle manufacturing, packaging, shipping, returns, just to name a few of the aspects of this business you will need to be aware of and handle to make this business a success.

Is there a simpler way?

Yes, how about an informational product? An ebook titled ?How to Draw a Giraffe?. It is digital and instant delivery, plus you can set up the website so that you never need to have a single step in the process except for answering customer queries! People will pay for information. You know from the keywords search that 1,600 people every month are searching for ?How to Draw a Giraffe?, so do you think you could sell a few of those on an eBook that is all about that? Of course you could!

So you have three different products (or ways of creating products) that you can apply to any hobby. You can be paid to do your hobby (painting giraffes), you can sell different aspects of the hobby (like unpainted D&D models, or Monopoly money for people that have lost theirs), or the third way is to create an informational product based on your hobby.

Are there more than different ways to monetize your hobby? Of course! Get creative and come up with your own unique way!

Now, to actually sell those products.

?

Step Three ? Selling Online

This is a simple step. Get a website and sell your product. There are a million ways of getting a website up, including hiring a professional such as myself, or you can find free website creators online just by Googling them.

Why would you hire someone, rather than do it yourself? Well, the first thing of course is time. The whole point of creating an online business is to free up your own time, and if you have never built a website before expect it to take a while (particularly if you don?t know what you are doing).

The second and most important reason is that a professional knows how to make your product sell. I?m not talking about just any web designer here, I?m talking about someone like us at Scott Creative who knows Internet Business and can actually create a website that will get bigger results for you than your own website could.

Now if you are doing it yourself, here?s one formula to keep in mind:

1 Website = 1 Product

Don?t try to get every product you can think of onto your website. Keep it simple. ?HowToPaintGiraffes.com? sells an eBook on How to Paint Giraffes. Nothing else. Make it easy for people to find. Give them as much content as you can for free, then sell them the product. Don?t make the mistake of trying to sell someone on a product without any knowledge of what it is and what they can expect.

So there you have it. If you can make money selling eBooks on how to paint giraffes (quick tip: the Keyword results are real, so if you are an artist, maybe this could be your 1st eBook), you can make money selling anything.

Get out there, get your online business started and get the freedom you want from your life!

The next rover to roam the moon's surface may come not from NASA and its rocket scientists but from college students and private companies working on a shoestring

In Brief

  • Now that NASA?s space shuttle is retired, scientists may turn to privately funded rockets to get themselves and their equipment into space.
  • The Google Lunar X PRIZE competition offers $20 mil?lion to the first nongovernment team to get a rover on the moon.
  • Of the 26 competitors, Astrobotic may stand the best chance of winning. Team leader William ?Red? Whittaker has spent his career building innovative robots.

On a muddy, rubble-strewn field on the banks of the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, a five-foot-tall pyra?midal robot with twin camera eyes slowly rotates on four metal wheels, its electric motors emitting a low whine. In a nearby trailer, students from Carnegie Mellon University huddle around a laptop to watch the world through the robot?s eyes. In the low-resolution grayscale images on the laptop?s screen, the rutted landscape looks a lot like the moon, which is the robot?s ultimate destination.

Conductive fabrics may power future infantry gear, uniforms set to enter field trials

Conductive uniforms may power future infantry gear, set to begin field trials next month
If you thought your Sunbeam electric blanket or those Hello Kitty foot warmers were advanced pieces of kit, then you'd best divert your eyes from this story out of the UK. In an effort to eliminate the mess of power cables and extraneous batteries from a soldier's tech gear, one British company is currently experimenting with conductive fabrics as the basis for future military uniforms. The material is able to deliver power to any number of devices -- all from a single battery -- and also features a redundancy aspect, with the ability to reroute power should the fabric become torn or damaged. The company, known as Intelligent Textiles, recently received a £234,000 grant from the Ministry of Defense and hopes to begin field trials of its equipment next month. While these high tech uniforms may see a limited military issue by year's end, it's thought unlikely that the gear will become widespread until 2014 or beyond.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood's surprise decision to field a presidential candidate is stirring fears that the two biggest powers to emerge from the ouster of Hosni Mubarak ? the Islamists and the military ? are maneuvering to put in place a new rule in Egypt not much different from the old, authoritarian one.

If they succeed in divvying up the most important positions in government, the new leadership could be a blow to the hopes for an inclusive democracy that drove last year's uprising against Mubarak. Opponents of the Brotherhood and military warn that the maneuvering could lead to a repeat of the Mubarak-era domination by a single party of all executive and legislative powers ? only now with an Islamist tinge.

The Brotherhood controls nearly 50 percent of parliament and dominates the constituent assembly that is in charge of writing Egypt's new constitution. Given its electoral strength, its candidate ? Khairat el-Shater, the Brotherhood's deputy head but in reality its strongest figure ? instantly leaps to front-runner status for the presidency in the May 23-24 election.

"We didn't have a revolution to end up with a dictatorship of the one party," said the head of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, Ahmed Said. "If el-Shater is president, will he rule in the name of the people or according to the orders of the Brotherhood?"

The decision to field the Brotherhood's strongman was a surprise even to many of its own members, some of whom have openly expressed disappointment that the group is breaking an earlier promise not to run. They worry the decision sacrifices the group's credibility for short-term gains.

Liberals and secular leaders are fuming the group has abandoned its repeated promise to share power and fear it could monopolize rule, thwarting hopes for democracy. They worry eventually the Brotherhood may try to impose greater Islamic law restrictions and impose a new ruling elite of religious conservatives. Already, for example, a female Brotherhood lawmaker caused a stir by speaking out against the 4-year-old ban on female genital mutilation.

The Brotherhood clearly sees the presidency as vital to protect its political gains.

Since Mubarak's fall, its plan has been to use parliament to wield authority, promote its long-term Islamist agenda, and ensure the new constitution gives greater powers to the legislature, weakening the president's overwhelming authority. Two months after it convened, the Brotherhood has discovered that the parliament it dominates has little power, its attempts to replace the military-picked prime minister with its own have been blocked by the military, and competing Islamists were making their own bids for the presidency.

Saad Emara, a senior Brotherhood figure, said that after its parliament election victory the group has a right to real authority, the presidency, to implement its program.

Mubarak's ruling party "controlled all powers without a popular mandate," said Emara, also a lawmaker. "If we get the presidency, and we have majority in parliament and we can name the government, there will be some kind of harmony in implementing the project we want to achieve for Egypt."

El-Shater's nomination is also a bold play in the Brotherhood's convoluted relationship with the military, which took power after Mubarak's fall. Each distrusts the other but neither can afford a confrontation, so they have been dancing around each other in both cooperation and competition for power.

The generals have not commented on el-Shater, though state media close to the military have more sharply criticized the Brotherhood as power hungry.

However, some observers believe the nomination could not have come without a nod of approval from the military.

"A tactical compromise is entirely possible," said Steven Cook, an Egypt expert with the Council on Foreign Relations. "There is not a tremendous amount of trust but there is a willingness to make deals for short-term political interests."

The generals' top interest is to have a president who preserves the military's long-standing privileges and powers, amassed over nearly six decades at the helm of Egypt's political system. The military is believed to have been searching for a credible candidate to back, so far without success.

In el-Shater, the Brotherhood have put forward a powerful figure who would firmly establish the group's authority if he wins. But he is possibly a figure the generals can deal with, seen by many as an extension of the Mubarak-era politicians with a strong business background.

El-Shater, 61, joined the Brotherhood in 1974 and built a business empire. With other Brotherhood members, he founded one of the region's most established information systems companies, which survived a crackdown by the Mubarak regime in 1992. His businesses range from an upscale furniture chain to manufacturers of menswear and buses.

He became the behind-the-scenes strategist and top financier of the Brotherhood ? as powerful as its supreme leader ? and was imprisoned by Mubarak for 12 of the past 20 years. He is known as a supporter of free market economics but also as a conservative within the group, who shies away from addressing women in the eye in keeping with Islamist modesty demands. Brotherhood members who worked close to him say he is more pragmatic than ideological.

Khalil el-Anani, an expert on Islamic movements, likened el-Shater to Ahmed Ezz, a business tycoon who helped restructure Mubarak's ruling party in the 2000s to empower young, business-minded members and boost the potential candidacy of Mubarak's son Gamal to office.

"El-Shater created power centers within the group which answer to him," said el-Anani. "He is a broker, a man that you make business with. ... He is a kingmaker who doesn't have charisma. The military can easily trust in someone like him."

Emara, of the Brotherhood, said the group's nomination is "a strong card."

"There is a balance of power on the ground," he said. "We absolutely don't want a clash (with the military)... But we are trying to reach some kind of accord."

He denied any closed-door dealmaking. But he suggested the two sides could find a way of living together. He said the Brotherhood accepts that the military keep the defense and national security portfolios, while the Brotherhood wants power to deliver on issues of restoring security and improving the economy, education and health services and could put aside for now its demands for a more powerful parliament.

The U.S. and Israel have has seemed unalarmed by his nomination, and U.S. lawmakers have been among a stream of foreign dignitaries meeting him in recent weeks. "It was a very interesting and enlightening meeting," said Republican David Dreier, part of a congressional delegation that sat with him for over an hour Monday. He said el-Shater addressed human rights, women's rights and rule of law.

Commenting on el-Shater, Israel's vice prime minister said Sunday the peace treaty is in the interest of any Egyptian leader.

Critics say the presidential bid shows the Brotherhood only aims to dominate. Many liberals, leftists and secular figures have quit the constitutional assembly to protest Islamists' control of its formation.

"They are flexing their muscles," said Ziad el-Oleimi, a lawmaker for the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. "Between them and the military council, each is trying to assume as much power as they can while sidelining all other forces."

Even within the Brotherhood, there is dissent over the decision to field any candidate. The vote in the Brotherhood's Shura Council over whether to do so was close ? 56 in favor and 52 against. Dissenters have formed a group called "A Brotherhood Cry" that has held rallies objecting to the nomination and demanding the right to vote for whomever they prefer.

"People view us as ... a group that seeks to monopolize power," said Gafaar el-Zaafarani, a young Brother and son of a former leader.

Moreover, if a fully empowered Brotherhood can't ease Egypt's multiple problems, the group's long-term position is threatened. "If we are in the front, we may fail and our failure be exposed. This is a disaster."

Hani Sabra, a Middle East analyst with the Eurasia group, said el-Shater's candidacy shows the emboldened Brotherhood "enjoys a slight edge" in the competition with the military, though tensions could boil over if the generals retaliate by putting forward their own candidate.

"But the fact that the Brotherhood fielded el-Shater illustrates that it essentially called the shots."

HTC One X Review - Computers|Gadgets|Games N Entertaint ...

HTC had to hit reset on its smartphone strategy. Lulled, perhaps, by several years of leading the Android device market, 2011 brought a really strong push by Samsung and a growing mismatch between the agile software users desired and the bloated, over-stylized interface of HTC Sense. The HTC One X ? and the only Series it leads ? is the primary of the company?s try to reclaim its former position, a Tegra 3 toting powerhouse with a major screen, boastful camera and slick design. Still with the threat of the Samsung Galaxy S III at the near horizon, let alone Apple?s iPhone 5, the only X must do greater than storm the spec sheet if it?s to make the impact HTC requires. Read on for the whole SlashGear review.

HTC One X Review

Hardware

The One X is a huge device, there isn?t any escaping it. Still, at 134.36 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm and 130g it?s surprisingly lightweight considering the reality you get a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 display. Build quality of the polycarbonate chassis feels slightly cheaper than the metal-bodied Sensation-series devices of last year, however the upshot is a more pocket-friendly device. It?s creak- and flex-free, too, though the drawback to that?s the non-user-accessible battery. Beyond a microSIM slot ? complete with an HTC branded tray-opening pin, no less ? the casing is a superb lump.

HTC One X Review

HTC has used a brilliant LCD panel at the One X, and it?s a very good screen. Bright and crisp, with great viewing angles and escaping the sometimes over-saturated colors you locate on AMOLED screens, it floats nicely within the inset Gorilla Glass panel. Our main complaint is the banding visible on graduated graphics, noticeable in Android?s many screens with shades of grey. The curved glass edges are harking back to Nokia?s Lumia 800, too, catching the sunshine and leaving the handset feeling more organic and tactile.

HTC One X video review:

The polycarbonate itself ? available in black or white ? is bowed in cross-section though the glass itself is flat. That offers slightly of the Galaxy Nexus? profile, though it is a fleeting optical illusion. Also unlike the Nexus are the dedicated buttons beneath the screen, HTC not following Google?s own Ice Cream Sandwich implementation and instead insisting on touch-sensitive back, home and app-switcher keys. Despite accommodating them, the HTC is really roughly the identical length ? though broader ? than the Samsung, way to a narrower earpiece section.

Still, there?s sufficient room for a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a double-row of drilled speaker perforations; behind lurks a notification LED. At the left edge is the microUSB port while the quantity rocker is at the right; the ability/lock button is at the top edge, and because of the length of the single X may be tricky to achieve occasionally. You furthermore may get a three.5mm headphone jack and a row of 5 pins at the lower right hand corner of the rear panel to be used with the optional docking cradle.

HTC One X Review

The back also plays host to a Beats Audio logo above a small but reasonably loud speaker. The only X has two microphones, one on top and any other at the bottom edge, for noise-reduction during calls and stereo audio recording in videos. Finally, there?s the camera, an 8-megapixel unit which protrudes slightly in a silver nub, and which packs autofocus, an F2.0 aperture, 28mm lens, a backside-illuminated sensor, ?smart? LED flash and support for 1080p HD video recording.

Inside, this European One X packs NVIDIA?s 1.5GHz quadcore Tegra 3 chipset, paired with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of non-expandable storage. It?s an ambitious chip, especially given the non-accessible 1,800 mAh battery, though NVIDIA insists that its 4+1 core design means performance won?t outweigh longevity.

HTC One X Review

Connectivity includes WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX high-quality audio support, NFC and, inside the European model, quadband HSPA/WCDMA (850/900/1900/2100) and quadband GSM?EDGE. The microUSB port supports MHL-HDMI with the suitable ? and never included ? adapter ? while there?s the same old GPS, gyroscope, digital compass, proximity and ambient light sensors, and G-Sensor.

In the united states, the only X can be sold on AT&T as an LTE version, ditching Tegra 3 in favor of a Qualcomm-supplied dualcore chipset but gaining high-speed 4G mobile connectivity.

Software and Performance

The One Series is the 1st of HTC?s devices to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, woven through with the most recent iteration of Sense. HTC?s custom interface and apps suite had become over-stylized and unnecessarily hefty in its latter versions, and there is been a conscious move to pare it back to basics that?s obvious from the beginning.

HTC One X Review

Gone are the attention-catching but GPU-sapping 3D homescreen widgets of last year, replaced with cleaner range more based on Ice Cream Sandwich. You would not necessarily realize Google?s newest version is under the hood, with the app launcher controls and other buttons redesigned, or even the app-switcher UI have been replaced, a CoverFlow-style carousel of running software in place of the fundamental thumbnail previews of the Galaxy Nexus.

Some of HTC?s changes work better than Google?s own design decisions. Tapping and holding at the homescreen opens up the widgets panel, a more common-sense placement than as an addendum to the app launcher. As much as nine homescreen panes might be live ? shown in a scrolling bar around the top of the widgets organizer ? with the numerous sizes of widget themselves underneath. You could both sides-swipe to peer each preview, or choose from a drop-down list. Tabs along the underside of the screen offer app icons and shortcuts, the latter for such things as Direct Dial contacts, bookmarks, Gmail labels, Dropbox folders ? the cloud storage service now being baked into HTC phones ? and music playlists. A pinch-gesture shows all the homescreen panes in thumbnails from the desktop.

HTC One X Review

The app menu itself is now split into three sections ? all apps, those frequently accessed and people downloaded ? with search and Play Shop shortcuts on the top. However you can too decide to remove and rearrange these tabs, though whether or not you eradicate all categories bar ?all apps? the identical collection of icons are shown on-screen.

HTC has several new widgets, including radio apps ? which require the headphones to be plugged in and act because the antenna ? and a range of useful calculators. They give the impression of being great, though they?re all oversized: a number of the widgets soak up half or more of every homescreen pane, when even the calculators will be smaller and still usable.

HTC One X Review

The new HTC Music hub pulls together shortcuts for all the audio services ? though not the FM radio, as a minimum by default ? and more third-party options should be added in. It?s more like a launcher than a real unified media system, however. There isn?t a option to combine tracks from different services right into a single playlist, to illustrate, so your local tracks will always be become independent from your Spotify streaming.

HTC has made a couple of modifications to the same old browser, adding a Flash Player toggle to the contextual menu alongside the choice to force the desktop version of web sites. There?s also an incognito tab option next to the brand new tab button within the window switcher, making it simpler to browse without leaving a trail within the history. Panning, scrolling, pinch-zooming and Flash playback is all as smooth as you?d hope from a high-end phone.

HTC One X Review

NVIDIA?s Tegra 3 is a mainstay in recent Android tablets, but it is a rarer thing in smartphones. With 4+1 cores ? the latter responsible, so NVIDIA says, for low-level tasks that could otherwise demand the key cores remove darkness from and consume more power ? there is definitely no shortage of grunt for games and multimedia playback, both being smooth. However, the performance is usually noticeable in daily use, along with within the speed that a heavy Gmail inbox is prepared to be used . We ran Geekbench Advanced, and the single X scored an admirable 3399.

HTC One X Review

We?re had our eye at the aptX Bluetooth stereo audio profile for some years now, but it is only now that the technology is popping up in additional consumer hardware. Replacing the default audio codec ? in devices that support it ? it promises ?true hi-fi quality?; in practice, with a hard and fast of Sennheiser PX-210 headphones, we found improved bass and treble clarity in conjunction with a discount in background hiss. Needless to say, in case you only have regular Bluetooth accessories then you definately won?t see the aptX improvement.

Camera

HTC is very pleased with its camera technology within the One Series; based on the company?s research the camera is the number 1 deciding factor when a buyer eyes up their next phone. The only X gets an 8-megapixel CMOS with a backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor for improved low-light performance, together with an F2.0 aperture, 28mm lens and a dedicated imaging chip.

HTC One X Review

As well as 8-megapixel images, the single X can record Full HD 1080p video. In actual fact, the telephone can shoot still images similtaneously recording footage: both the video recording and the shutter release button are on-screen normally, together with a brand new effects control with more than a few the picture tweaking options.

There?s also an LED flash. We?ve generally been unimpressed with LED photo-lights on smartphones ? they typically have a narrow sweet-spot outside of which images are either washed out or hopelessly under-illuminated ? but HTC?s flash can automatically adjust between multiple levels of brightness in accordance with the proximity of the topic.

HTC One X Review0

The extent to which it really works is difficult to look; low-light images are still something of a pot-luck. Supply decent lighting, however, and the single X is in a position to some superb stills, with accurate colors instead of the over-exaggerated hues some phones err toward, and crispness in all however the closest macros. Hold down the camera button and the only X automatically goes into continuous shooting mode, capturing as much as 99 shots in a row; let go, and also you see a timeline of the pictures so that you can opt for the handiest, optionally deleting the rest.

1080p Full HD video, meanwhile, shows some jerking in fast pans, though the image quality itself is comparatively strong. We also noticed an occasional jitteriness in the course of the first few seconds of recording occasionally, though that?s easy enough to trim out of the general clip. A camera button shown during playback allows 1920 x 1080 stills to be grabbed too.

Phone & Battery

The One X is a huge phone, and making voice calls may be a little unwieldy; still, the outcome is evident audio, owing to the twin microphones and noise reduction system. The Beats Audio tuning is on the market to all media apps, not only HTC?s own as in 2011 Beats-branded phones, and does its usual job of boosting bass frequencies.

By settling on a unibody design, HTC was forced to make the 1,800 mAh battery non-user-accessible. It?s larger than what?s inside many handsets, but with a quadcore processor that seems something of a need.

HTC One X Review1

Still, we?ve been pleasantly surprised by the only X?s runtimes. From an entire charge, with push email turned on and a mix of heavy browsing, messaging, Google Maps and a few media playback, in addition to use of the camera and some voice calls, the only X lasted nearly 12 hours.

That?s under somewhat extreme conditions; with more typical use, we managed an afternoon before recharging was needed, and that ?+1? Tegra 3 core appeared to justify its inclusion with low standby drain in spite of push services active. Turn to CPU- and GPU-intensive gaming and it?s possible to empty the single X in relatively short order, unsurprisingly, but that you must give you the chance of either hardcore performance or regular speed.

Wrap-Up

HTC has a great deallots to prove. Whether it was right down to resting on its collective laurels, misreading the market, or just getting its 2011 product line wrong, last year turned out to be something of an annus horribilis all round. Rivals accelerated past, Apple broadened its iPhone range across price points, and by contrast HTC phones looked derivative and lumpen.

HTC One X Review2

They?re not accusations which may easily be levelled against the HTC One X. The recent flagship is distinctively designed and well constructed, has an admirable camera and an outstanding screen. The Tegra 3 chipset is in a position to both speed and endurance dependent on what?s demanded of it, particularly gaming and HD video, though the non-expandable storage could prove limiting in case your connection isn?t as much as streaming from cloud storage which includes Dropbox.

Is the single X enough to inure HTC against the incoming threat of the Galaxy S III or the iPhone 5? Both devices are shaping as much as be worthy contenders, and HTC?s 2011 range struggled to compete with their predecessors, however the One X is leagues sooner than where the feeling series left off. It?ll take greater than beauty and a quick chip to make the single X an automated success, but it?s is a capable phone and, perhaps more importantly, an indication that HTC has finally turned a corner in its strategy and products.

The Inflatable, 35,000-Gallon Subway Plug

Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate

April 2, 2012 4:04 PM Text Size: A . A . A Q

What is the Resilient Tunnel Project?

AThe project started in 2007. The idea behind the tunnel plug was to be able to section off regions in a subway system so you can contain flooding and prevent a widespread event. Flooding is the most difficult, but there are also concerns about fires and toxic gas releases, all of which could be addressed by a plug. Q

What other ideas have people considered?

APreviously, transit agencies looked at using rigid floodgates that could be moved in to block off the tunnel when needed. But these were bulky, hard to install, and expensive, so we wanted to come up with something like a balloon or big bag of air that we could build at a lower cost and section off tunnel as needed. Q

Why did you choose the "inflatable plug" design?

AThe concept of a plug was something less costly and quickly deployable. We could put it in a soft bag container, like a huge parachute, and mount it to the tunnel walls. We also wanted to use what we knew?one of our partners, ILC Dover, had done a lot of work for NASA and had a lot of experience in high tech textile design and manufacturing. The technology we?re using in the tunnel plug is actually tech they?ve used in space habitats and space suits; the Mars Rover landing bags were made from the same fabric as the tunnel plug. So even though the design and the application are novel, working with high strength textiles was something we had a lot of experience in. Q

What were some of the biggest design challenges?

AOur first idea was to build a single layer tunnel plug out of the strongest fabric we could find, but we found that tears would propagate the fabric, causing it to fail. So we went back to the drawing board, and the current design has a three-layer construction.

The outer layer is made from Vectran fabric; it looks like a basket or woven tablecloth, a webbing design for additional strength. The two additional layers inside are a second layer of unwoven Vectran and a flatter, inner layer that holds the water or air used to inflate the plug.

Letting the plug fall into place is also a very important part of the design. If you fold this thing up compactly and then deploy it, it probably won?t go into tunnel the right way and there will be gaps. The packaging is very important, so our project team is coming up with different ways to fold it and put zip ties in place (like a fishing rag) so when a certain pressure is reached, the zip ties pop and different portions of the bag will inflate. This makes for a staged inflation and ensures that you fill the entire tunnel.

Q

What?s the inflation mechanism?how does it blow itself up?

AIt depends on what you use to fill it, but the way you get there isn?t as important as ensuring it?s properly filled. There are multiple paths?water, high-pressure pumps, high capacity air compressors, fans, compressed air generators ? but if this thing doesn?t get positioned in the tunnel correctly, it won?t work. The most effective way to ensure this is to have it properly packed, tied, and inflated with air first. The initial inflation should be an air fill; whether you want to maintain it with continued air flow or fill it with water is up to the operator. Q

Can it be remotely inflated, and how long does it take?

AYes, the idea is to have remote inflation but the time depends on the water or air source used to inflate it. The range is somewhere around 30 minutes, usually quicker, and that?s inflation to full pressure. Q

How small is it when it?s not inflated?

AOur target was to be within 20 inches of the wall, but that varies. One of the things we?re still working on is how to design the container so it?s optimal for each tunnel system. The transit people want a cloth-like bag to hold it as compactly as possible, but we?re still working this part. If I had to, I?d say it?s roughly the size of a really long parachute.

Q

Where will they be placed? And how many per transit line?

AThis will be a decision based on transportation authorities, because you have to take into account different tunnel configurations. Trying to prevent the spread of flooding in system, you have to think, "Where would water flow? Where are other tunnels?" and figure out the best way to segment it off and maximize the value of the plug. Q

Where is there the biggest potential for something to go wrong?

AInitially we thought we would go with a hard container, made of steel or something. But then we realized, ?What if it didn?t open?? So we came up with the solution to have a soft bag, with cutting devices to cut the lace and allow the plug to fall out. We tried to think about minimizing the things that could go wrong in the design.
