Cardinal says Catholic Church '200 years out of date'

ROME (Reuters) - The former archbishop of Milan and papal candidate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said the Catholic Church was "200 years out of date" in his final interview before his death, published on Saturday.

Martini, once favoured by Vatican progressives to succeed Pope John Paul II and a prominent voice in the church until his death at the age of 85 on Friday, gave a scathing portrayal of a pompous and bureaucratic church failing to move with the times.

"Our culture has aged, our churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous," Martini said in the interview published in Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

"The Church must admit its mistakes and begin a radical change, starting from the pope and the bishops. The paedophilia scandals oblige us to take a journey of transformation," he said in the interview.

In the last decade the Church has been accused of failing to fully address a series of child abuse scandals which have undermined its status as a moral arbiter, though it has paid many millions in compensation settlements worldwide.

Martini, famous for comments that the use of condoms could be acceptable in some cases, told interviewers the Church should open up to new kinds of families or risk losing its flock.

"A woman is abandoned by her husband and finds a new companion to look after her and her children. A second love succeeds. If this family is discriminated against, not just the mother will be cut off but also her children."

In this way "the Church loses the future generation", Martini said in the interview, made a fortnight before he died. The Vatican opposes divorce and forbids contraception in favour of fidelity within marriage and abstinence without.

A liberal voice in the church, Martini's chances of becoming pope were damaged when he revealed he was suffering from a rare form of Parkinson's disease and he retired in 2002.

Pope John Paul II was instead succeeded in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI, a hero of Catholic conservatives who is known by such critical epithets as "God's rottweiler" because of his stern stand on theological issues.

Martini's final message to Pope Benedict was to begin a shake up of the Catholic church without delay.

"The church is 200 years out of date. Why don't we rouse ourselves? Are we afraid?"

Martini was much loved and thousands paid their respects at his coffin in Milan cathedral on Saturday.

Jordan, UN appeal for $700M to aid Syrian refugees

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan and the U.N. refugee agency are issuing an urgent call for $700 million to help handle the rapidly rising number of Syrian refugees seeking safe haven in the country.

Jordanian Planning Minister Jafaar Hassan said Saturday the money would be used to assist 240,000 refugees and other Syrians in Jordan. He said they are an added drain on the country's already overburdened water and energy resources.

Some 5,000 Syrians crossed into Jordan in a 24-hour period earlier this week. More than 180,000 Syrians have found refuge in Jordan from their homeland's civil war. That is the largest number in the region.

UNHCR representative Andrew Harper said "many more Syrians" are expected to come to Jordan.

He said the needs were growing faster than funds were being received.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jay-Z's entrance said it all: He bounced up and down on top of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, mimicking Rocky before he took the stage in front of nearly 50,000. His song "Made In America" played in the background.

Obama urged the crowd to vote this fall. He also said Jay-Z's story is "what Made In America means" and added that he enjoys listening to the rapper's music on his iPod.

Jay-Z headlined the first night of the two-day festival he curated, performing hits like "99 Problems," ''Dirt Off Your Shoulder," ''Big Pimpin'" and "Empire State of Mind." He called it "the first annual Made In America festival."

The event is the first kind for the entrepreneurial Jay-Z, who is married to superstar Beyonce and owns a music management company, fashion line, nightclub and restaurant; he's also a co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets.

"Since you were so good to me, Philly, I'm going to be good to you tonight, Philly," Jay-Z yelled.

Rappers Pusta T and Big Sean hit the stage, and Kanye West followed, receiving an electrifying roar from the crowd. They performed a medley of hits, such as "Mercy," ''Dance" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

Why are the simplest things the hardest? Venting gone bad.

Why is it that even the simplest things have problems getting installed properly.

Is it because the builder hires a few young high school kids to help out then forgets to actually supervise the kids when working?

There are?a few?things that a builder needs to remember.

1. You are getting paid to build this home for someone else.

2.??Lack of supervision can and will lead to failure in the long run.

3. Build a home as if you are going to be living in the home.

4. And most important. Never leave unqualified workers unattended?to do tasks when building a home.

Here is a look at a vent issues I had yesterday. Seems each home gets a little worse.

I personally have installed a very large number of roofs and roof vents. If i was to ever get over a frame rafter by mistake, then i woulkd repair the mistake then place the vent on the proper location.

But in this case there seems to be?a trend with the builders in Eddy County New Mexico.

I think this builder used a "beaver" to cut out the roof vent hole.

I would always use and have my workers use a "saw's all", or "hole saw" to cut out the can vent opening.

The way these vents look, it seems they did'nt even have a saw on site when installing the vents.

In this last picture you can see that the vent is not installed over the hole for the vent. This reduces the proper air flow for the roof/ attic and will create problems for the home owner in the future.

Protests decry Spain cuts to immigrant health care

MADRID (AP) ? Some 300 people blocked a ring road in the Spanish capital Saturday to protest spending cuts that will leave large numbers of illegal immigrants without access to free health care.

Many undocumented immigrants who do not contribute taxes to social security are, as of Saturday, to lose the national health cards that had entitled them to free treatment

The decision contradicts a pillar of Spain's welfare state ? free health care for anyone in need ? and it comes as the country struggles with 25 percent unemployment and massive financial problems.

The government expects to save ?1.5 billion ($1.9 billion) a year with the measure. It puts the number of people affected at 150,000, although media reports say the real figure could reach 900,000.

Protests over the measure have taken place in towns and cities across Spain in recent days.

Christoph Napene of Senegal was among those blocking the road in Madrid on Saturday. The 46-year-old said he's been unable to find a job in Spain and thus unable to apply for legal residency.

"I've had strong stomach pains for over a week and have an appointment with a doctor on Monday," said Napene, whose work skills include teaching French. "We'll see what happens."

The measure allows for some exceptions: care during pregnancy, childbirth and post-birth emergency, and serious illness or accident.

"In any case, foreigners under the age of 18 will continue to receive health care under the same conditions as Spanish nationals," a ministry statement said.

Manuel Cervera, health care spokesman for the ruling Popular party, said illegal immigrants could still have access to treatment, but they will have to pay for it, either now or later.

If immigrants lack insurance or their countries don't have special deals with Spain, they will be billed for treatment once they get a job and start paying into the social security system, Cervera said.

He also noted that each of Spain's 17 semi-autonomous regions retained responsibility on how to implement the payment requirements of the new measure.

But many of the people protesting the plan did not seem reassured.

"I know a lot of people who will suffer as a result of this action," said Abuy Nfubea, organizer of Spain's Pan-African Movement, which he said represented some 5,000 members.

Spain is in a double-dip recession, spurred largely by a real estate crash in 2008.

It has been trying to avoid following Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus in having to ask for an international financial bailout.
