What Is Online Reputation Management or ORM? | Life Social Media

Once your business is online and especially if you have a social media presence (Twitter, Facebook, Google+) then it is likely people will be talking about your business. It is great if everything being said is positive though inevitably there will be negative comments related to your business brand.

As a small business owner you probably won?t have the resources to employ someone to do online reputation management and it probably isn?t necessary. Though devoting some time each day, or once a week, to doing your own online reputation management can be beneficial to your business and something to consider.

Positive mentions should be publicised, re-tweeted, linked to or displayed on a news page as this will help build online brand identity. Negative mentions, especially on popular websites or blogs, can have a bad impact on your business brand online, so be sure to deal with these effectively.

Approach the commentator and rectify the situation as best possible, or use SEO techniques to downplay and counteract any negative effect it could have on your business. Here are some tools to help you do your own online reputation management for your small business.

Free tools to do your own ORM

Google Alerts - Google Alerts is a free service from Google related to search queries you specify. Whenever new content is indexed that matches your search query you will be notified by Google via email. Setting up alerts for your business name as well as key figures within your business would be a good idea. Search queries related to competitors would also be good to help get some insight into popularity of other businesses in your market segment. Find out more at http://www.google.com/alerts

Social Mention - Social Mention is a search engine that will find mentions across various platforms for a term you specify. Test it using your business brand name or website address and you may be surprised how often your business appears. It is a useful tool for aggregating mentions from various sources quickly. Find out more at http://www.socialmention.com

Twitter Search - Though a part of Twitter and often overlooked, using Twitter Search to find mentions about your business is important to have in place for ORM. Software such as TweetDeck allows you to save searches which makes it easier for you to quickly scan for any new mentions and reduces repetitive searches. Monitter.com provides a free online tool with similar functionality.

Yahoo! Pipes - For more advanced users Yahoo! offers a service called Pipes which allows you to aggregate content from all over the internet. This will require a bit more time than the above mentioned tools though if you are a power-user it may save you time in the long run.

There are plenty of other tools out there and finding ones that you are comfortable using may take a while. Dedicating a portion of your working week to online reputation management is important in online marketing for your business. Once you are successfully monitoring and managing your businesses brand online it will positively affect your business and improve search results rankings.

ORM is also a good way to identify how internet users view your business and allows you to influence this for the best of your business.

Planned Parenthood awaits funding cutoff in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Planned Parenthood said Wednesday that Texas clinics are operating like normal for now, even as state officials move to quickly freeze funding after a federal court gave Republican lawmakers a victory in their efforts to punish health providers linked to abortion services.

The court ruling allows the state to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider in the Texas Women's Health Program, while a lawsuit over the issue moves forward. But just how fast Texas can sever funding remains unclear.

The health program provides family planning and other health services to more than 130,000 low-income women and is designed for those who might not otherwise qualify for Medicaid.

At Planned Parenthood's more than 60 clinics statewide, nothing has changed yet. "But we're also letting (patients) know that we're not sure who long that will be the case," Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Rochelle Tafolla said. "Because of the ruling, it's jeopardized."

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans on Tuesday halted an injunction that had prevented the state from cutting off funds until an October trial on Planned Parenthood's challenge to a law banning money for clinics affiliated with abortion providers. The law was passed last year by the GOP-controlled Texas Legislature.

Stephanie Goodman of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission said Wednesday that authorities were consulting with state Attorney General Greg Abbott's office on the next step.

"We should be able to move quickly to enforce the law and exclude doctors and clinics associated with abortion providers," she said.

Planned Parenthood provides services such as cancer screenings ? but not abortions ? to about 52,000 poor Texans as part of the health program. One such patient, Rene Resendez, said the court's decision means she'll yet again have to find a new clinic where she can have annual pap smears and other wellness checkups, as well as get birth control services.

State budget cuts for all women's health clinics led to the March closure of the Planned Parenthood clinic where the 25-year-old college student used to go, so she went to another one in her native Odessa. Now she won't be able to go there anymore, either, because she's a participant of the Women's Health Program.

"I feel like the state is taking away that choice where I feel the most comfortable, and forcing me to start over at another clinic," Resendez said. "Planned Parenthood provides more services than just abortion and this boils down to women's health and ensuring that low-income people like myself can still have health care."

The state's legal battle with Planned Parenthood is just one front of a larger war over the new law. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is pulling funding from the Texas Women's Health Program after Nov. 1 because it says the law violates federal rules. The federal government had paid about $35 million for the program, with Texas paying about $5 million.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry vowed to keep the program going with just state funds, and Goodman provided The Associated Press with a letter detailing the state's plan to set aside $42 million for the program through the end of fiscal year 2013. Most of the money is set to come through cost-cutting, including $30.8 million by imposing a hiring freeze on Health and Human Services Commission administrative posts, and stepping up the state's efforts to recover Medicaid funds lost to fraud or wasteful spending.

What remains to be seen is how Texas will fund the program in subsequent years. In the letter, the commission estimates that without the program, the state and federal governments would have to pay $148 million through fiscal year 2015 in extra Medicaid costs due to rising pregnancy rates.

Goodman said the commission sent out fliers to health care providers on how to refer clients to a website or toll-free number to find clinics that are part of the Women's Health Program.

Resendez said she knows where she can find a list of qualifying providers, but she doesn't want to change clinics again. She relies on the Women's Health Program because she can't afford the $130-plus per month premium to get health insurance through her school, the University of Texas Permian Basin.

She said many of the lawmakers who approved the law last year are men who don't face the same health concerns.

"They don't have to worry about going to get pap smears or contraception services to help them decide when they want to have a family," Resendez said, "and yet they are the ones making the decision."

Helin: Blazers Open At No. 20 In NBA Summer Power Rankings

Kurt Helin of ProBasketballTalk.com sounds a little bit higher on the Portland Trail Blazers than some other analysts in his summer power rankings. The Blazers are ranked No. 20 overall, good for No. 11 in the Western Conference.
------------------------------
They have a couple quality young pieces ? LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum ? and Damian Lillard is my guy for Rookie of the Year (Anthony Davis probably wins but he is too obvious). But it?s a rebuilding process and it will take some time.

Gibbons apes on helium trill like humans

Gibbons effortlessly use the same techniques as professional opera singers when calling out to other animals, scientists found by listening to the squeaky songs of one of the apes on helium.

The Japanese study provides evidence for an unusual physiological similarity between gibbons and humans.

"The complexity of human speech is unique among primates as it requires varied soft sounds made by the rapid movements of vocal tracts," lead researcher Takeshi Nishimura, from the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, said in a statement. "Our speech was thought to have evolved through specific modifications in our vocal anatomy. However, we've shown how the gibbons' distinctive song uses the same vocal mechanics as soprano singers, revealing a fundamental similarity with humans."

Nishimura's team analyzed 20 melodious and loud calls of a captive white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) in a normal atmosphere, followed by 37 calls in an environment infused with helium.

Sucking in helium from a balloon gives humans a squeaky, high-pitch-sounding voice, because the gas, which is less dense than air, pushes the resonance frequencies of the vocal tract upwards, but doesn't change the sound at its source. An analysis of the gibbon's squeaky songs suggested that the same is true for these apes. Like humans, the origin of the sound of a gibbon's call, which occurs in the larynx, is separate from the vocal tools used to modify it, the research showed. [ Listen to Gibbon Calls ]

What's more, the analysis demonstrated gibbons have expert control over the tuning of their vocal cords and tract when singing ? an ability that is important to the subtleties of human speech and is mastered by soprano singers.

"This is the first evidence that gibbons always sing using soprano techniques, a difficult (vocalization) ability for humans which is only mastered by professional opera singers," Nishimura said. "This gives us a new appreciation of the evolution of speech in gibbons while revealing that the physiological foundation in human speech is not so unique."

The study was published this week in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
