New Delhi, Nov 15: Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is on a visit to New Delhi after a long gap of almost 40 years. After paying her respect to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and meeting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, Nov 14, Suu Kyi is waiting to visit her alma-mater. Sources say that on Friday Suu Kyi will visit her alma-mater Lady Shri Ram College where she learnt the first lessons of democracy.
College authorities have confirmed her visit.
"We are happy to believe that we may have contributed in some way to her in a sense her own grammar of politics. We would like to believe that but we learn a great deal from her. So here is an example of a student who teaches the community where she's supposed to have studied," says the principal of the college.
Suu Kyi might have studied in the college long time back, but current batch of students at Lady Shri Ram college is all excited to welcome one of their most illustrious alumni.
"We are excited more so for the ideology she has followed throughout her life and she has inspired all of us to that leap and not be crippled under fear," said a student. Sudharshana, another student, says, "We can't imagine that we will get to see her. Since you enter college you keep on hearing of a lot of alumni and off course the heights that she's reached."
Suu Kyi's classmate and childhood friend Malvika Karlekar is also expected at the function. She recounts her days with Suu Kyi by saying, "Suu became the President of the debating society. She wrote this wonderful play on Antony and Cleopatra where all acted whether we could or not."
